A weird thing is happening to some of the paint in my house. It's flaking in odd ways, and white things are growing through the paint. At first I was worried that water was getting into the walls, and a fungus was feeding on that, but no. It's just salt in the walls coming out and forming crystals.
Never one to let a chance at geekery go by, I grabbed my crummy microscope and tried to snap some pictures. Eventually I succeeded by taking the microscope apart, sticking a telescope eyepiece (cost: 20 times that of the microscope) behind it, and taking a picture through that. Because of the heavy chromatic abberation of the plastic objective lens in the microscope I had to make it black & white.
